Avoidance & numbing coping

2 answers · from the Hello Angel grief library

Why do I keep distracting myself instead of thinking about it?

Avoiding grief through staying busy, scrolling, or distractions is a common coping response. It can feel easier in the moment, but emotions may return later when things slow down.

Why does grief suddenly hit me really strongly after I've been avoiding it?

When emotions are pushed away for too long, they can come back in stronger waves later. This does not mean you are going backward—it means your mind is finally processing what it held in.
